世界遺産唐招提寺は1998年（平成10年）に世界遺産に登録されています。
南都の他の寺社と比べて大きな災害にあわなかったため、奈良時代建立の貴重な伽藍が当時のままの姿で残っています。

唐招提寺は鑑真大和上にゆかりがあるお寺です。
多くの苦悩の後来日した鑑真大和上は、東大寺で5年を過ごしたあと、新田部（にたべ）親王の旧宅地に759年（奈良時代）、戒律を学ぶための道場を開きました。
金堂はその後鑑真和上の弟子の一人であった如宝の尽力により完成したと言われています。
井上靖の小説「天平の甍」と呼ばれ親しまれている金堂は759年に創建され、2000年から10年をかけて大修理が行われました。
