紫陽花の季節がきました。

今年はまだ梅雨入りもしていない珍しい年ですが、そのせいで雨が少なく鼻が小さめです。

それでもさすがあじさい寺と呼ばれる矢田寺は素晴らしい数の紫陽花が咲き乱れて惹きつけます。

奥の斜面までびっしり咲いてます。

矢田寺ではお地蔵さまをお釈迦さまの入没後、弥勒菩薩が出て再び法を説かれるまでの56億7千万年の無仏の間救いのないこの世に出現し、その身を種々の姿に分身し、一心に民衆を救済されるありがたい仏様として大切にされています。

本尊もお地蔵さまです。

さまざまに色を変えて目を楽しませる紫陽花の花はお地蔵さまの化身とされています。

25000㎡の境内に咲き誇る約60種1万株のあじさいの花にひととき現実を忘れて楽しんでほしいと昭和40年から植えられています。

あじさいは奈良時代から栽培されていました。
梅雨時にさまざまに花の色を変えながら咲き続けるその美しさから万葉集にも詠まれています。

あじさいは日本特有の花木で、諸外国には野生種は無く、西洋あじさいと呼ばれるものは江戸時代後期にシーボルトなどによって欧州に送られ改良されたものです。
矢田寺のあじさいは5月から9月まで楽しむことができます。

お地蔵さまの周りにもたくさんの紫陽花が咲いて素晴らしい眺めです。
