夕日の名所八坂の塔

祇園のシンボルでもある八坂の塔。
正式名称は法観寺といい、創建は592年で聖徳太子が開いたと伝えられています。
八坂神社と清水寺の間に位置し、「八坂の塔」という名前で呼ばれています。
街中にそびえ立つ五重塔は周辺のランドマークとなっており、境内には塔以外に目立った建築物がないことからそのように呼ばれているようです。
東大路から東へ坂道を上る風景はなんともいえず風情があり素敵です。

周辺にはお土産物やさんは旅館などが立ち並び、多くの観光客で溢れています。現在の塔は1440年に足利義教の援助によって再建されたものです。
塔の高さは46mで、東寺、興福寺の五重塔に次ぐ高さです。
